Information for Military Students

As an institution located in the capital of the United States, American University is particularly invested in supporting our nation’s service members and their dependents and honoring the sacrifices they have made to our country. The convenient and flexible nature of our online programs make them especially suited for active and reserve members of the military as well as for veterans seeking to transition into civilian life. Yellow Ribbon Program

The university is proud to take part in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. Through this program, American will contribute a certain percentage of tuition expenses, which will be matched by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Eligible students will meet these requirements:

  • They served an aggregate period of active duty after Sept. 10, 2001, of at least 36 months
  • They were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and they served 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001
  • They are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above

Note that Yellow Ribbon benefits are subject to availability of funds.
