President’s Message

Welcome to American University, a place with a global outlook and a passion for public service. These elements were in the air in 1893, when American University was chartered by the United States Congress, to fulfill a dream of our nation's first president::a national university in the nation's capital. Founder John Fletcher Hurst laid the ground work for a mission unique in higher education: A national and international university that turns ideas into action and service by emphasizing the arts and sciences, then connecting them to the issues of contemporary public affairs writ large, notably in the areas of government, communication, business, law, and international service. True to that mission, our students and faculty use their knowledge to create meaningful change to meet some of the most important local, national and global challenges of our time. Our location gives our students access to influential leaders and practitioners, whose professional experience and networks help them succeed upon completion of their programs.

It is an exciting time to be a part of the American University community. The commitments we’ve made to new faculty, online programs, and extraordinary facilities extend access to American University to working adults around the world. I invite you to explore our online programs and infuse your career with new expertise and inspiration to effect meaningful change in the areas that matter most to you.
