The Mission of American University

The university’s mission is expressed fully in our Statement of Common Purpose.

Chartered by Congress in 1893 as a national university to serve the public interest and build the nation, American University educates active citizens who apply knowledge to the most pressing concerns facing the nation and world. Students engage with leading faculty experts and world leaders, learning how to create change and address issues such as global economic challenges, corporate governance, government reform, public heath, human rights and justice, diversity, the environment, sustainable development, immigration, and disruption in media and journalism.

American University takes full advantage of its location in the nation’s capital, a remarkable laboratory for learning and applying knowledge. Faculty and students are deeply connected through partnerships and internships to pinnacle organizations in government, business and non profit sectors. Faculty provides intellectual and ethical leadership to shape emerging worldviews, forge new knowledge, and prepare students to lead and serve.
