Matt Winkler, MA, APR, has blended more than 20 years of experience in the NCAA, NHL, WNBA, MLS, the Olympics, and the World Cup into innovative strategy for the sports, events, and higher education industries. Mr. Winkler founded, developed, brought to market, and administered the Georgetown University Sports Industry Management initiative (SIM), launched in fall 2008. As a faculty member at American University, Mr. Winkler developed and taught Sports Communication & Media and Sports Marketing Management. He has frequently served as an expert resource for the media and has been quoted in outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, SportBusiness Journal, and NBC News. Mr. Winkler is also the Founder and Executive Director of The Sports Events Marketing Experience (SEME), a premier sports career conference.

The online MS in Sports Analytics and Management was designed through our strategic curriculum methodology, the Professional Studies Experience. This methodology focuses on the need to prepare professionals for the 21st-century workplace by offering courses that provide both field-specific knowledge and skills as well as a broad range of professional skills and knowledge that apply to a variety of fields. All courses were identified, evaluated, and developed by experts and practitioners in the field.

Buffy Filippell has had many firsts in her career. She created TeamWork Online, a first-of-its-kind, web-based talent recruiting system focused on connecting candidates and employers in sports and live events. In 2016, TeamWork Online celebrated the remarkable achievement of 100,000th successful candidate and employers’ matches. She was the first female agent at IMG, and, was one of the first recruiters to focus on sports while at the worldwide search firm Korn/Ferry. These firsts have created a legacy that reaches across nearly every professional sport, multiple collegiate programs and the leading live event producers in the world. Filippell began her career with Wilson Sporting Goods before joining IMG, representing tennis stars such as Andrea Jaeger and Australian legend Ken Rosewall. In 1985, she joined Korn/Ferry, and although her work included executive searches in multiple industries, her passion for and knowledge of sports allowed her to bring in such clients as the Women’s Tennis Association, the Ladies Professional Golf Association and the Women’s International Professional Tennis Council. Her experience at Korn/Ferry led Filippell to create TeamWork Consulting in 1987, a retained executive search firm specifically geared toward recruiting executives in sports and live events. The firm has been retained to conduct over 400 executive searches for the country’s most notable sports organizations. Filippell was an early adopter in the digital space, recognizing the need to establish a lower-cost web-based model for organizations to identify talent. She established TeamWork Online, which today, boasts a 1,000-plus employer base spanning 85 percent of all major league sport organizations, minor leagues, golf, tennis, motorsports, mixed martial arts, colleges, major events and the majority of National Governing Bodies.

Jim Brady, AU ’89, currently serves as ESPN’s public editor, providing independent examination, critique, and analysis of ESPN’s programming and news coverage on television and in digital, print, audio, and other media. An award-winning editor and executive with more than 20 years of experience in digital news, Brady is the CEO of Spirited Media, which operates the mobile news platform Billy Penn in Philadelphia and intends to expand soon into other cities. Previously, he served as Executive Editor of, Editor-in-Chief of Digital First Media, General Manager of TBD, and head of News and Sports for America Online. He is a past president and current board member of the Online News Association, and he also serves on the boards of the American Society for News Editors and the National Press Foundation. Brady earned a BA in Print Journalism from American University.

John FitzpatrickAbout John Fitzpatrick
John Fitzpatrick, AU ‘07, is the Marketing Manager for Licensing & Business Development at the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). As a licensing professional for the NFLPA, Fitzpatrick helps the organization develop and grow its licensing and consumer products business. His experience includes prospecting, account management, marketing support, product ideation, retail placement, and strategic planning. An entrepreneur at heart, Fitzpatrick also helped develop products for a start-up called American Car Socks while in graduate school. In sports-specific roles, he has worked with D.C. United, Red Zebra Broadcast, and the Washington Redskins. Fitzpatrick has a Master of Professional Studies in sports industry management from Georgetown University and a BA in journalism from American University.
