Keeping Up with Sports Analytics and Management

From national sports associations to the Olympics, Matt Winkler’s 20+ years of diverse sports management experience has influenced the impact he’s made to the world of higher education in sports.

Matt WinklerMatt Winkler previously served as an Associate Dean while administering Georgetown University’s first Sports Industry Management Initiative. He continued his career in higher education by returning to his Alma Mater, American University where he recently launched the university’s first online MS in Sports Analytics & Management for the Office of Graduate & Professional Studies.

In addition to his commitment to higher education in sports, Winkler has continued his involvement in the industry. He founded the Sports Events Marketing Experience (SEME), the premiere sports career and networking conference, and regularly attends and speaks at various professional conferences within the industry.

This past March, Matt hosted his conference, the Sports Events Marketing Experience, in Washington, D.C. at American University. He partnered with TeamWork Online, a service that provides a networking portal for individuals interested in sports industry careers and internships.

The conference hosted a variety of industry professionals, coming from backgrounds in organizations and companies such as the NFL, NBC, and Under Armour. Attendees also had the chance to compete in a “Personal Brand Elevator Pitch Challenge.”

To celebrate the conference’s 14th year of operation, the first evening ended with a kickoff reception at the top of the yard at the Red Sox vs. Nationals game at National Park.

MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference

Industry professionals gathered this past February to educate individuals about the impact analytics has had on the global sports industry. To serve the sports management professionals of the future, Winkler assisted in leading the Resume Review portion of the conference. He also spoke in the conference’s career panel to address common topics and relevant insights within the industry.

U.S. Department of State / Sports Diplomacy Cultural Affairs

The SportsUnited division of the U.S. Department of State invited Winkler to serve as a lecturer in Mexico City this March. To assist the organization’s launch of a program designed to influence young professionals to explore the sports industry, he presented on topics including:

  • Managerial Activities
  • Sports Marketing
