Online Master of Science in Nutrition Education Program Director Presents Health and Education Study At American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting

American University's online Master of Science in Nutrition Education Program Director, Anastasia Snelling, recently presented at the 2015 American Educational Research Association Annual Meeting, held April 16-20 in Chicago, Illinois on her paper, Washington DC's Healthy Schools Act: The Relationship between School Health and Educational Opportunity.

Research Paper

About The Paper
The paper, co-authored and co-presented with American University's Sarah Irvine Belson, Dean of the School of Education, discusses a study of 80,231 students in over 200 DC schools which seeks to describe the relationship between academic achievement and student's health status, particularly as it relates to the implementation of Washington DC's Healthy Schools Act (HSA).  The researchers analyzed the relationship between school, level of academic achievement as operationalized by a standardized math score, and the school health environment. The outcomes of this work include the ability to describe school health environments, explore the interrelationships between school health and student achievement, and to assess the impact of the HSA, with particular attention on how the implementation of this policy might affect children differently based on their socio-economic backgrounds.
