After graduating from Saint Joseph’s University in 2015 and beginning my first job as an Assistant Media Planner, I began to think that being in the “real world” felt like a whirl wind of debt, exhaustion, and the perpetual contemplation of spending the weekend with friends or on my couch with a glass of wine and a One Tree Hill marathon. As the months progressed and my knowledge of the media world expanded, I began to develop an inkling that I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and explore graduate education options in communication. Graduate school was never part of my “plan” after receiving my college diploma. However, with feelings of uncertainty about my future career path, I decided to take the leap and make graduate school part of my plan.
Knowing I wanted to pursue a career within the Communications field, American University’s Master of Arts in Strategic Communication (MASC) immediately caught my eye amongst many other colleges and universities I researched that offered similar programs. Not only was American’s Strategic Communication program online, it also provided ten incredibly beneficial classes that fully interested me – from Public Relations to Social Media. For the first time since my college graduation, I had my “Ah Ha!” moment. Finally, I believed I was on the path – my path – to finding my future career.
Four months have passed since I began the Master’s in Strategic Communication with American University, and to say I am pleased with my experience thus far would be an understatement. The program has opened my eyes to a world of new possibilities and has unleashed an extremely motivated individual in myself that I never knew existed. With this superwoman-type motivation, I have learned how to successfully balance my job responsibilities, my school work, and my social life. This program has pushed me to work harder, study longer, and always say yes to that extra shot of espresso.
I have found my future career niche and I am more than ready to embark on the endless opportunities this degree will provide me. I have developed a passion for writing through this program and I am thrilled to apply my writing skills and share my experience with future students through American University’s online programs website. As I work towards a career in Public Relations, I stand firm with the notion that pursuing my Master of Arts in Strategic Communication at American University was the prime first step in my “real world” experience.
