Corinne Hoare is a full-time professor of Public Communication. She has nearly a decade of high-level experience in the public relations and strategic communication field in both the private and public sectors. Her experience includes stints at the White House, on Capitol Hill, at non-profit organizations and for-profit companies. Prior to American University, she led the Strategic Outreach Division at Public Notice, a non-profit organization focused on fiscal and economic policy issues. Most recently in government, she served at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) during the 2008 financial crisis as the youngest director of communications in the agency’s history. She also traveled frequently for the Office of Presidential Advance where she worked with media on five continents on behalf of the President of the United States and other senior U.S. Government officials. Earlier in her career she served as the deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and as press secretary for a Colorado member of Congress.

Corinne holds a BA in Communication Studies from the University of San Diego and an MA in Strategic Communication from American University.

CORINNE HOARE: As an undergraduate at the University of San Diego, I was inspired by my faculty to teach at the university level. I want to offer students the same enrichment and inspiration that my faculty members at USD provided me. While my teachers instilled in me a deep love for communications and politics, my path to teaching at AU was far from certain. It was a journey that exposed me to communications in a variety of different environments, and I hope to be able to leverage those experiences to provide you a terrific experience in crisis communication.

After graduating from the University of San Diego, I began my career as an assignment editor for KGTV Channel 10, San Diego's ABC local affiliate. My passion for politics brought me across the country to Washington DC where I served as a press secretary for a member of Congress. Then as the deputy press secretary at the US department of agriculture, I traveled to China to advocate for international trade issues and worked on the communications campaign for the Farm Bill of 2008. It was here that I was first exposed to crisis communications while preparing for a potential mad cow disease outbreak in the US and managing the communications for a melamine contamination in pork meat on our supermarket shelves.

I was recruited to join the White House and served as the youngest communications director in history at the White House Office of Management and Budget. I serve at OMB during a turbulent time for our country's economy, the financial crisis of 2008, and I was charged with communicating the budgetary implications of each of the government's bailouts to the banking and auto industries. Most days, my phone was ringing off the hook from reporters asking questions for which we didn't have an answer and needing information that was still in many cases unfolding. This high stress situation helped me to hone my ability to stay calm under pressure and stick to a consistent message.

During my time in government, I traveled frequently as a White House presidential advance representative, where I worked with the international media in Tanzania, Australia, and Israel on behalf of the president and other senior US government officials. After leaving government, I lead the strategic outreach and communications program for a nonprofit here in DC. It was during this time that I received my Master's in Strategic Communication from American University. After graduating from the program, I was able to fulfill the dream that was inspired during my undergraduate years. I joined the faculty as a full time professor at American University's School of Communication.

In addition to my faculty position at AU, I maintain a public relations business consultancy for a wide range of clients inside the beltway. I love teaching because I get to integrate practical elements from my real world experience and combine them with a theoretical academic framework. And crisis communications is one of my favorite courses to teach.
